Medical Exchanges
The Trust has a long standing agreement with Manipal Teaching Hospital, Pokhara, Nepal. The Trust donates the costs of drugs, dressings, transport and post-treatment care, whilst the staff at Manipal give their time for free. This way, medical access can be extended to some of the poorest people in Nepal who would otherwise be unable to afford access healthcare.
Dr Fraz Mir & Lesley Wood (Nurse Consultant) from Cambridge with Iype Cherian and staff at Manipal on Fraz and Lesley's visit, facilitated by Addenbrookes Abroad, Cambridge the universitys Humanitarian Centre and the Mountain Trust - not to mention Professor Cherian and Manipal Teaching Hospital staff. This was the first visit - and we hope a harbinger of change for the better in the future.
Addenbrookes Hospital is a centre of excellence in the UK and is closely linked with the Ubniversity of Cambridge medical community. Through the Humanitarian Centre, Fraz Mir, Lesley Wood and Evelyn Brearley of Addenbrookes Abroad we have established a bridge between Addenbrookes and Manipal. We expect great things to grow from these small beginnings.
The Humanitarian Centre, Cambridge, introduced the Trust to Addenbrookes Abroad and since then, they have added us to their approved list of NGOs and helped recruit Fraz and Lesley. We have already touched base since their return on how we can develop their highly beneficial visit, recruit others and make the most of Professor Cherians visit to Cambridge early next year.
Besides senior medical staff and academics here in Cambridge, helping their counterparts in Nepal, we send out medical students who also both work towards the greater good whilst there and convey the realities of the story to their contacts having returned to the UK.
The Mountain Trust has been very fortunate in attrracting some exceptionally talented and dedicated volunteers. |
